Our Location

The Advising Center is located in Breland Hall 152 and open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

What We Do

The Arts and Sciences Advising Center staff primarily serves English and Creative Media Institute, Undeclared and Unclassified Freshmen in the college.  The center is staffed by one full-time professional advisor, two graduate assistants and four undergraduate peer advising mentors.

In the Arts and Sciences Advising Center, students have direct access to advisers who take an interest in the students' programs and progress, supply them with information, and guide them toward getting the most out of their university experience. In carrying out these objectives, advisers:

  • are available to listen to student concerns and questions.
  • maintain confidentiality.
  • provide accurate information about university regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • provide guidance in students' choice of classes.
  • refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.

The advising process varies, depending on the students` year in school and whether students have declared a major.  English and Creative Media Institute, Undeclared and Unclassified students are advised in the advising center.  All other declared students are referred to their major departmental faculty advisors.

To help ensure graduation on a timely basis, Arts and Sciences students must declare a major by the time they have completed 36 credits. All sophomores and upperclassmen with declared majors are advised by faculty members in the student's major department. Undeclared sophomores with fewer than 36 credits are advised in the Advising Center.

Transfer students with 28 credits or more and a declared major are advised in the department of their major. Others are advised in the college Advising Center, except as noted above. New transfer students are encouraged to visit with Advising Center staff to review the evaluation of their transfer credits and determine how these credits may be used to meet degree requirements.
