Arts and Sciences Awards Committee
The College of Arts and Sciences Awards Committee is responsible for reading applications, ranking and selecting the recipients of the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Faculty Achievement Awards, Travel Awards, Course Release Awards, Outstanding College Faculty Awards, and College Faculty Development Grants. The committee is comprised of 7 members of diverse faculty from across Arts and Sciences disciplines. The committee chair is the associate dean for development and external affairs. The Dean of the College appoints the members. All awards may be accepted for either fall 2012 or spring 2013.
Outstanding Faculty Achievement Awards
In appreciation for the dedication and accomplishments of our faculty members, the College of Arts and Sciences has established Outstanding Faculty Achievement Awards. The purpose of these awards is to reward and recognize those who have demonstrated excellence in Scholarship/Research, Teaching, and Outreach in accordance to the mission of New Mexico State University. This is a cash award.
Recipients of Outstanding Faculty Achievement Awards must wait 2 academic years to reapply.
Scholarship/Research/Creative Activities $1,000
Criteria:
- Achieved recent exceptional levels of quality scholarship/research/or creative activity
- Regional, national or international recognition that may include but is not limited to: publishing, major grant funding, career award, fellowship, or other honors
Eligibility:
- Tenured or Tenure Track-Not Yet Tenured
Application process:
- Nomination letter (faculty or head)
- Full CV
- Synopsis of scholarship/research/or creative activity 1000 words or less

Selection process:
- Majority vote by the College of Arts and Sciences Awards Committee with preference to international or national recognition.
Teaching $1,000
Criteria:
- Evidence of outstanding teaching that is supported by, but also extends beyond student evaluations
- Substantive achievement may include but is not limited to: curriculum development, new or innovative pedagogy, mentoring, development, or enhancement of student learning through technology
Eligibility:
- Tenured or Tenure Track-Not Yet Tenured

Selection process:
- Majority vote by the College of Arts and Sciences Awards Committee with preference for applicants with evidence of substantive achievement in instruction.
Outreach $1,000
Criteria:
- Effort in the broader community that enriches quality of life
- Achievements in outreach may include but are not limited to: addressing persistent social or educational problems, developing innovative solutions to social injustice, preserving cultural heritage or relate critical important areas of awareness (e.g. climatic change, energy, etc.) to the general public

- Majority vote by the College of Arts and Sciences Awards Committee with preference to applicants who demonstrate effort in improving or developing strategies leading to positive social impact.
College of Arts and Sciences Travel Grants
The College recognizes the value of faculty development through travel opportunities that include attending conferences, workshops, meetings, and professional symposiums. Travel Grants are designed to help facilitate travel for faculty development or recognition at conferences or conventions and may be used for travel related to research, creativity, teaching, or outreach. The College of Arts and Sciences will place the travel funds in an operating account within the respective department head for dissemination.
Recipients of Travel Grants must wait 1 academic year to reapply.
Travel $1,000
Criteria:
- Recognition for excellence at a major conference
- Evidence of faculty development at a national or international level
- Support of research, creative activity, teaching, or outreach
Eligibility:
- Tenured or Tenure Track-Not Yet Tenured
Application process:

- Submit proposal, 1000 words or less discussing how a travel grant will support faculty development and/or recognize achievement

Selection process:
- Majority vote by the College of Arts and Sciences Awards Committee with preference given to faculty who provide evidence the travel grant will specifically enhance scholarship and in general benefit the faculty, department, and college.
College of Arts and Sciences Course Release Awards
The College acknowledges the importance of scholarship and creative pursuit. The Course Release Awards are presented to faculty members who are involved in scholarly endeavors and who will benefit from a reduction in teaching load to initiate, further, or complete these activities. The release may be taken either fall or spring semester in consultation with the respective department. This course release is for one class over one semester.
Tenured Faculty

- Evidence of scholarly or creative activity
- Need of course release to initiate, move forward, or complete scholarly or creative activity
- How proposed scholarship or creative activity will benefit your discipline, the department, and the college

- Tenured Faculty

- Submit proposal, 1000 words or less to include a discussion of what specific benefit the course release will provide for you and what general benefit would it will provide to the College

- Majority vote by the committee for tenured faculty members with heavy teaching loads who are working on research projects or creative activities with a need for a course release.

College Faculty Development Grants
The College of Arts and Sciences recognizes the value of College Faculty development through opportunities that include attending conferences, workshops, meetings, and professional symposiums. These Grants are designed to help facilitate college faculty development and may be used for expenses related to work that promote improved teaching and student retention. The College of Arts and Sciences will place funds in an operating account within the respective department for dissemination.
Recipients of College Faculty Development Grants must wait 1 academic year to reapply.
College Faculty, Non –Tenure Track $1,000
Criteria:
- Evidence of meritorious work in areas of expertise
- Evidence of how the development grant will benefit faculty, department, and college
- Recognition for excellence at a major conference or workshop
Eligibility:
- College Faculty Non-Tenure Track
Application process:

- Submit proposal, 1000 words or less discussing how a development grant will specifically enhance your teaching and in general benefit the Department and College
