NMSU Choirs present ‘Peace’ March 13
On March 13, the NMSU University Singers, Women’s Chorus and Statesmen will present a concert titled “Peace.” The concert will feature La Catrina String Quartet as they join with the choirs in presenting two classic choral masterworks, Mozart’s Coronation Mass and Schubert’s Mass in G. Both of these works present the traditional Latin text with beautiful, poignant and uplifting music.
The title of the concert, “Peace,” is taken from the closing text of the Mass, “have mercy on us, give us peace.” These words seemed so timely for the world in which we live that two additional selections were chosen to close the concert. A warm, contemporary work by Craig Courtney sets the famous prayer from St. Francis of Assisi, “Let me be an instrument of Thy peace.” The final selection is a new, original composition, with a jazz/gospel flair, by Music Department Head Lon Chaffin. It is also based on the St. Francis text, but takes an assertive, determined voice as it states, “We will make a difference. We will make a change.”
Ida Holguin will conduct the Women’s Chorus and Statesmen as they present the Mozart, and Chaffin will conduct the Schubert with the University Singers.
Please join us for this evening of glorious music and in our commitment to share peace and make a difference. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the NMSU Atkinson Recital Hall in the Music Center on campus. All are invited and admission is free.
