Legendary radio host, NMSU alum to give public talk, meet with students

Guy Phillips has been a regular part of the morning for St. Louis radio listeners for 38 years and is still going strong. The New Mexico State University alumnus’ career was decided the moment he stepped in front of a microphone at KRWG radio and television stations. While still in college, working at El Paso’s KELP radio at age 19, Phillips was the youngest host in the station’s history.

Phillips will share what he has learned over decades as a top broadcaster with students, faculty and the public as part of the College of Arts and Sciences “Alumni Connections” series on Thursday, Sept. 14. Among a day of activities, Phillips will tour the campus, meet with broadcasting students and give a public talk titled “Radio Now and Then: My 45 years in the Business” at 4 p.m. at Gerald Thomas Hall, Rm. 194.

"Of all the places I've traveled and lived I always find being on the NMSU campus as home,” Phillips said. “I'm anxious to spend time rediscovering my professional roots and spending time with students and staff alike. I might even see an Aggie football win."

Phillips is a member of the St. Louis Radio Hall of Fame and earlier this year he was nominated for induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame.

“Guy Phillips is a great role model for our students,” said Enrico Pontelli, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “We appreciate him taking the time to give us an inside look at the broadcast industry and how it’s evolved.”

Phillips emcees various events in St. Louis and donates hundreds of hours of service to St. Louis charities, among them Friends of Kids with Cancer, Alternatives to Living in Violent Environments (ALIVE), the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the Women’s Safe House, the Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Alzheimer’s Association.

“We started this series last fall to help our students connect with alumni from the college who are leaders in their field,” Pontelli said. “Guy Phillips is a great example of someone who not only has earned phenomenal career success, but also gives back to his community.”
