“I am so proud of these students and their achievements,” said NMSU Chancellor Dan Arvizu. “Great Minds in STEM is a national leader in promoting the foundational elements of STEM, such as critical thinking, problem solving and creativity. These skills are tremendously valuable for all students to be successful. Congratulations to these Aggies.”
The Computing Alliance of Hispanic-Serving Institutions hosted the computer science track during the Virtual Great Minds in STEM 2020 Conference. In 2020, 400 CAHSI students were part of the conference along with faculty mentors and staff. The NMSU recipients included computer science students Nicole Price, Maximino Robles, Kami Otero De Owens, Catalina Sanchez Maes and applied mathematics student Wendy Paola Puche Umbarita.
“GMiS offers a unique opportunity to students from traditionally underrepresented groups and from Minority Serving Institutions to connect and to grow a sense of belonging to a community.” said Enrico Pontelli, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “The recognitions that the conference and its corporate sponsors award to our students have great meaning, as an opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements that our students continue to realize.”
Students participated in networking sessions with industry leaders and a two-day career and internship fair as part of the event. Many of these students received internship or job offers from attending the GMiS conference.
“We have been sending CAHSI students to GMiS since 2016, in 2019 we supported 21 student to attend the in person conference in Orlando,” said Raena Cota, computer science program manager. “This year we sponsored 60 students to attend the 2020 Virtual GMiS conference.”
“This scholarship enabled me to continue my masters in computer science,” said Price, a graduate student in computer science. “I am grateful for the opportunity to focus on the hard work of grad school without worrying about the fees and finances. I look forward to inspiring and helping other students by paying it forward in the future.”
Robles, a junior computer science major, is grateful for the opportunity.
“This scholarship has helped cover my costs towards graduation from my computer science degree at NMSU. As a result of worrying less about money and focusing more on my career, I’ve received a return internship offer from Northrop Grumman Corporation among other internships.”
