Call for Applications
Application submission deadline: 10:00 PM MDT, Wed, June 3rd, 2020
The Southwest and Border Cultures Institute (SBCI) was founded in November 1998 upon receipt of a Challenge Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The NEH award of $450,000 was matched by $1.35 million in non-federal dollars to create a permanent endowment of $1.8 million dollars. The purpose of the SBCI is to enable acquisitions by the University Library and Museum, fund faculty and graduate student research on Southwestern and US-Mexico Border issues in the humanities, and to fund on- and off-campus public programs that relate to humanities issues in the Southwest and US–Mexico Border region.
The SBCI began funding activities in 2001. The program is administered by an Administrative Council, with representatives from the departments of Anthropology, English, History, Languages, and Linguistics and from the University Museum and University Library. Faculty and students from other departments may apply for SBCI funding as long as their project is a humanities-focused project as determined by the Administrative Council.
For the purposes of this SBCI grant program, ‘Humanities’ has the following definition:
What are the Humanities: “The term ‘humanities’ includes, but is not limited to, the study and interpretation of the following: language, both modern and classical; linguistics; literature; history; jurisprudence; philosophy; archaeology; comparative religion; ethics; the history, criticism and theory of the arts; those aspects of social sciences which have humanistic content and employ humanistic methods; and the study and application of the humanities to the human environment with particular attention to reflecting our diverse heritage, traditions, and history and to the relevance of the humanities to the current conditions of the national life”.
–National Foundation on the Arts and the Humanities Act, 1965, as amended

Mini-Grants
Applications for the
Spring 2018 College of Arts & Sciences Faculty Mini-grant
award program are now being accepted.
The application submission deadline is 11:59 PM Tuesday, February 27th, 2018.
College of Arts and Sciences Mini-grant awards support scholarship and creative activities by tenured and tenure-track faculty across the college, except those holding visiting appointments. An award will typically be for $500 to $1,000.
A primary goal of the College of Arts & Sciences mini-grant program is to provide seed funding for new projects with the potential to attract future external funding support. Many mini-grants lead to subsequent external grant proposal submission. Any project concerned with scholarship or creative activities that can lead to peer reviewed outcomes (including the scholarship of discovery, application, integration, and/or pedagogy) is potentially fundable.
If you experience problems with the online forms available below please contact Associate Dean Jim Murphy (murphy@ad.nmsu.edu) or Research Affairs Committee Chair Bruce Olberding (bruce@nmsu.edu).
Applications (including the Cover Page and Project Narrative and citations and brief CV and Budget) should be sent as a single PDF to the Research Affairs Committee Chair Dr. Bruce Olberding (bruce@nmsu.edu) and cced to Associate Dean Jim Murphy(murphy@ad.nmsu.edu). Thank you.
