Jim Murphy

Jim Murphy is the husband of one and father of three. He and his family arrived in Las Cruces in August 1998 when he started as an Associate Professor in the Department of Astronomy. He was promoted to the Associate rank in 2004, and to the Full rank in 2016. He served as Astronomy Department Head from August 2005 through July 2011. His scholarship/research is focused upon the weather and climate of Mars, for which he employs measurements returned by spacecraft and also computer models of the atmosphere of Mars. He has been involved in several Mars robotic exploration spacecraft missions. He earned his Ph.D. (1991) and MS (1986) in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Washington, and his BS in Meteorology (1984) from Texas A&M.
