A Starry Night
The College of Arts and Sciences’ A Starry Night Awards Program, pays tribute to leaders in our community who have left a lasting legacy of advancing the arts and sciences at New Mexico State University. For any university to thrive, it needs the support of its community leaders and visionaries—those who understand the importance of Town and Gown relations and who understand that we all mutually benefit when we work together to achieve ambitious and noble goals.
The Stars of Arts and Sciences recognizes living individuals who have achieved state, national, or international distinction by their accomplishments and leadership, all while supporting their community and the NMSU College of Arts and Sciences. Four awards are given this evening that recognize contributions in the different core areas of the college: the Town and Gown award, the Star of Arts and Sciences award, the Star of the Arts award, and the Star of the Sciences award. The College of Arts and Sciences recognizes also its departmental stars during the ceremony – these are outstanding faculty members, staff members, students, alumni, or community members that have made a difference in one of the departments in the college.
The funds raised will contribute to the College of Arts and Sciences’ Aggie Jumpstart program, a new initiative intended to provide a head start for incoming freshmen considered at-risk during the summer before their first semester at NMSU. This accelerated summer program will enable these students to get ahead on their required coursework, gain a variety of preparation skills such as time management, get acquainted with life on campus and become a part of a learning community. The funds raised for the Aggie Jumpstart program will provide scholarships and financial assistance to participating students to cover the cost of housing for the summer semester.
