College Scholarships

Apply by submitting a Scholar Dollar$ application between October 1 and March 1 for priority consideration.

 

All scholarships offered by the College of Arts & Sciences require a Scholar Dollar$ application. Scholar Dollar$ is open for the next academic year starting October 1st and March 1st  is the Priority Deadline. A Scholar Dollar$ application can be submitted after the priority deadline.

 

A new Scholar Dollar$ application must be submitted each year.

 

Submit a Scholar Dollar$ application to apply for scholarships. If additional documents are needed to apply, or specific questions in Scholar Dollar$ should be answered, these will be named in the Submit section for each scholarship below.

Arts and Sciences Scholarship

For high achieving, continuing students with a major in the College. Applications accepted only during Spring semester until deadline, first week in March.

  • College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate or Graduate Major
  • Sophomore classification or above
  • 5 or above cumulative GPA
  • Scholar Dollar$ application
    • Respond to “Please elaborate on your educational and career goals” prompt

Ralph W. Dressel Memorial Scholarship

Essay scholarship. Rotates between four areas of Arts & Sciences College: Fine Arts (2016 – 17), Social Sciences (2017 – 18), Humanities (2018 – 19), Sciences (2019 – 2020). Only students with eligible majors will have access to the essay questions in Scholar Dollar$ during their eligibility year.

Requirements:

  • Sophomore, Junior, Senior
  • 0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Declared major in the College of Arts & Sciences

Submit:

  • Scholar Dollar$ application
  • Answer three of the five Dressel essay prompts in Scholar Dollar$:
    1. Discuss what you consider the most serious problem facing our society today.
    2. Discuss what you consider your best talents and the talents you wish you had.
    3. Discuss why you believe your life to be – easier than/harder than/about the same – as that of most people.
    4. Discuss a personal accomplishment that has given you the most satisfaction.
    5. Discuss how you see the relevance of academic grading.

 

William V. Flores Scholarship

Established by former New Mexico State University provost and chief academic officer who was committed to social justice for immigrants and Dreamers/DACA recipients and the U.S. Mexico border.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate
  • Majoring in Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Government or Sociology.
  • 0 or higher GPA
  • Hispanic preference.

 

Eloy and Sylvia Hernández Scholarship

Sylvia Hernández was/is a Greater Southwest Regional Administrator with the General Services Administration (GSA). She was instrumental in awarding a Temporary Road to improve traffic flow and safety at the Columbus Land Port of Entry, which will also receive a new port of entry design.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate
  • Declared major in A&S
  • Preference to declared majors in Government or Sociology
  • 2.5 or above cumulative GPA
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen

 

Charles E. Stillwell Memorial Scholarship

Essay scholarship.

Requirements:

  • Sophomore
    • Renewable in Junior and Senior years if GPA at least 3.0
  • 7 or higher cumulative GPA
  • S. Citizen
  • Major within the College of Arts & Sciences
  • Financial Need as determined by FAFSA results

    • “What can be achieved for the world and humanity with the degree you are seeking?”

S. J. Scheidegger-Burke Scholarship

Single parent scholarship.

Requirements

  • Scholar Dollar$ application
  • Undergraduate
  • Sophomore, Junior or Senior
  • 2 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Enrolled full-time
  • S. Citizen
  • New Mexico resident
  • Financial Need as determined by FAFSA results
  • A&S major in the Sciences
    • Preference for Computer Science
    • If an eligible A&S major can’t be identified, then it shall be awarded to a Business major (preferred) or an Engineering major.
  • Must be a single parent who was previously married with custody of a minor child

Jerome G. Hartger Memorial Scholarship

For any A&S undergraduate major.

Lonnie and Joyce Terry Scholarship

For undergraduates whose legal residence is not New Mexico.

Reece Schleich Endowed Scholarship

Art scholarship established in honor of the memory of Reece Bradley Schleich.

Requirements

  • Declared major in the College of Arts and Sciences
  • Preference given to a student with a declared major in the Department of Art
  • Preference for a student whose state of legal residence is Wyoming

Karl J. and Sylvia P. Schueppert Endowed Scholarship

Rotates annually between Chemistry & Biochemistry (2016 – 2017), Art (2017 – 2018), and Music (2018 – 2019). Honors the Schuepperts; Mrs. Schueppert who spent her retirement in Las Cruces, New Mexico enjoyed attending events sponsored by the Art and Music Departments. Mr. Schueppert had a career as a chemist in the paper industry, while Mrs. Schueppert worked for the Anthropology Field Museum in Chicago in the Department of Restoration.

  • Classified as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior
  • 0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Declared major in the Chemistry & Biochemistry, Art or Music Departments
    • Preference for students interested in the chemistry of paper

Teddie Current Use Scholarship

Rotates annually between Art (2016 – 2017), English (2017 – 2018), and Math (2018 – 2019). Honors the mother of Cowboy Poet Baxter Black.

  • Enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences
  • Declared major in Art, English or Math
  • S. Citizen
  • New Mexico legal resident
  • Financial Need as demonstrated by official FAFSA results

Dr. Joaquin Loustaunau Memorial Endowed Graduate Fellowship

For graduate students majoring in Biology (Genetics), Mathematical Sciences or Sociology

  • Major in Biology, Mathematical Sciences or Sociology

  • Answer the following prompts/questions in Scholar Dollar$
    • “Please elaborate on your educational and career goals.”
    • What do you understand by the phrase “Public Service?” Describe any public service activities you’ve participated in. If you plan to participate in public service activities in the future, what might they be? What contributions might you hope to make to your society?
    • Describe your future career plans and goals. Why did you choose this career and these goals? What do you consider the greatest challenge and the greatest opportunity associated with this career?
    • If you had the opportunity to meet the late Dr. Loustaunau, what do you think you might have talked about?

Randhawa-Dhillon Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Physics Majors

For graduating seniors who have been accepted into graduate school.

For a student pursuing a degree in pre-med.

Lichtenfels-Howard Family Endowed Scholarship

The OMPP is open only to freshmen who are attending the first fall semester after graduating high school. Eligible applicants must meet NMSU admissions requirements, have a composite ACT score of 23 or higher (SAT of 1060 or higher) and high school GPA of 3.5 or higher. Students apply to be accepted into the program.

Requirements

  • New Mexico resident
  • Graduate of a public high school
  • Accepted into the OMPP
  • First year student when awarded scholarship for the first time
  • Remain a student in good standing in OMPP
  • Demonstrate Financial Need as determined by official FAFSA results
  • Scholarship will be renewed as long as above criteria met

Virginia Lee Memorial Scholarship

For promising cancer researchers.

Requirements:

  • Undergraduate majoring in Biology or Chemistry/Biochemistry
  • 4 or above cumulative GPA
  • Continuing student who has completed at least 32 credit hours at NMSU
  • Preference for New Mexico resident
  • Preference for females

Randhawa-Dhillon Memorial Scholarship for Undergraduate Biology Majors

For graduating seniors who have been accepted into graduate or medical school.
